Description Keeping the Longsnout Seahorse (Hippocampus reidi) Commonly known as the Slender Seahorse or Brazilian Seahorse, the Hippocampus reidi is one of the most popular species for marine hobbyists. They are celebrated for their elegant posture, long snouts, and remarkable ability to change colour to match their surroundings. While they are hardy compared to other seahorses, they still require a specialised environment and a dedicated keeper. Habitat and Tank Requirements Seahorses are not "set and forget" fish. They require a tall aquarium rather than a long one, as they graze and move vertically. Minimum Tank Size: 120 litres for a pair. Larger is always better for stability. Water Movement: Low to medium flow. High-velocity powerheads can buffet seahorses and cause exhaustion. Use spray bars or bubble walls to diffuse flow. Hitching Posts: This is vital. Provide plenty of "anchors" like gorgonians, seagrass (synthetic or live), or branched rock. Temperature: They prefer slightly cooler tropical waters. Aim for a stable 22°C to 25°C. Water Parameters Stability is the key to success. H. reidi are sensitive to spikes in ammonia and nitrite. Parameter Ideal Range Salinity (Specific Gravity) 1.021 – 1.024 pH 8.1 – 8.4 Ammonia / Nitrite 0 ppm Nitrate < 20 ppm Diet and Feeding In the wild, seahorses are ambush predators. In the home aquarium, they need to be fed at least twice a day. Preferred Food: Frozen Mysis shrimp is the gold standard. Ensure it is enriched with vitamins or amino acids. Feeding Stations: Many keepers use a small "feeding dish" (a flat rock or glass bowl). This reduces waste and allows you to monitor exactly how much they are eating. Captive-Bred vs Wild-Caught: We strongly recommend captive-bred specimens. They are already "trained" to eat frozen food and are significantly more resilient to common aquarium diseases. Temperament and Compatibility Seahorses are peaceful, slow-moving creatures. They will lose out on food if kept with fast, aggressive swimmers. Best Tank Mates: Pipefish, small blennies, or peaceful gobies. Invertebrates: Snails and micro-hermit crabs are excellent cleaners. Avoid large crabs or stinging anemones, which can injure or eat the seahorse. Corals: Stick to "seahorse-safe" corals like Zoanthids, Mushrooms, and Leathers. Avoid LPS or SPS corals with strong stinging cells (e.g., Torch or Elegance corals). Key Care Tips Watch for "Bubbles": Keep an eye out for Gas Bubble Disease, often caused by poor water quality or microbubbles in the water column. If you see bloating or bubbles under the skin, consult a specialist immediately. By providing a quiet, stable environment with plenty of hitching spots and high-quality food, your Longsnout Seahorses can live for up to five years, making them a truly rewarding addition to your marine display.
