Victorian 9K Gold Gate Bracelet with Padlock Heart Clasp
This 9k gold English Victorian gate bracelet is a variation of a classic design that uses the parallel lines of the bracelet segments to define what is known as a gate bracelet. In this version, the outer lines of the gate segments are curved to look like the lyre, an ancient stringed musical instrument. The bracelet connects with a heart lock clasp and safety chain. The heart clasp is engraved with the initials JSJ on one side and HVH on the other, both in the same floral font, suggesting this bracelet was originally a romantic token of love. A delicate leaflike motif runs above and below each set of initials. We love that the heart clasp is connected to the bracelet by a safety chain, so the heart clasp still dangles from the chain even when opened up off of the bracelet. The bracelet measures 7 3/4”. It is common for this type of bracelet to fit a bit looser on the wrist, riding a little lower in its placement on the hand. The width of the bracelet is 1/2”. It weighs 15.85 grams. Marked as 9k and with the maker’s mark CDB. Circa 1900.
