Crocus Dutch Mixed (Pack of 4 Corms)
Crocus Dutch Mixed (Crocus vernus) Transform your garden into a tapestry of late winter colour with Crocus Mixed, a vibrant assortment of large flowering Dutch crocus varieties. This curated blend delivers a cheerful combination of purple, white, striped, and golden yellow blooms, creating a rich display when most of the garden is still emerging from its winter rest. Planted in drifts or scattered naturally through borders and lawns, Crocus Mixed brings effortless charm that signals the arrival of warmer days. Each pack contains a hand-selected mix of top-quality crocus corms, chosen to provide a harmonious range of colours and bloom times. The large, cup-shaped flowers sit atop slender, grass-like foliage with fine silver central stripes. Blooms open wide in sunshine and close during overcast conditions or at night. All varieties in the mix are excellent naturalisers, multiplying freely by offsets to produce ever larger and more colourful displays with each passing year. Choose a spot in full sun to light shade with freely draining soil. These corms perform beautifully beneath deciduous trees, along garden edges, naturalised in lawns, or grouped in containers. Improve heavy or clay soils by digging in compost, coarse sand, or well rotted organic matter before planting. Plant each corm approximately 10 cm deep and 7 to 10 cm apart, with the pointed end facing upward. For a natural, scattered look, gently toss the corms across the planting area and plant them where they land. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a light mulch layer. A balanced bulb fertiliser or blood and bone at planting time supports strong root development and a generous first season display. Watering and Care Crocus Mixed requires very little ongoing care once established. Water lightly during dry spells in the growing season, but avoid overwatering or creating soggy conditions. Good drainage is essential to prevent rot during both the growing period and summer dormancy. After the flowers fade, leave the foliage to die back naturally over four to six weeks. This allows the corms to photosynthesise and store energy for the following year. Delay mowing lawn areas where crocuses are naturalised until the leaves have fully yellowed. Pruning Advice Crocuses do not need pruning in the traditional sense. Remove spent flower heads if you prefer a tidy look, but never cut the foliage until it has completely died back on its own. Premature removal of green leaves starves the corm of energy needed for next season's blooms. Every three to five years, lift and divide overcrowded clumps during the dormant period in late summer. Separate the offsets from the parent corm and replant immediately, or store in a cool, dry, well ventilated spot until autumn. Climate Zone Guide Cool and Alpine (ACT, VIC Highlands, NSW Tablelands, TAS): Outstanding performance. The reliable winter chill in these areas encourages robust flowering and strong naturalisation, with clumps expanding year after year. Temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, coastal NSW): Very reliable results. Plant in a well drained position and avoid summer irrigation over dormant corms to minimise the risk of rot. Subtropical (Brisbane, coastal QLD): Growing crocuses in subtropical climates is possible with pre-chilling. Refrigerate corms for six weeks before planting in the coolest part of the garden. Treat as annuals if return flowering proves inconsistent. Tropical and Arid (Darwin, Far North QLD): Not recommended. Crocuses need a prolonged cold dormancy period that tropical and hot arid climates cannot provide without significant intervention. Important Warnings Crocus corms and foliage are harmful if ingested, potentially causing stomach upset, nausea, and vomiting in humans, dogs, cats, and livestock. Keep corms stored safely away from children and pets. Wear gloves when handling corms if you have sensitive skin, as contact may cause mild irritation in some individuals. Do not plant near vegetable gardens where accidental ingestion is a risk. If ingestion occurs, seek medical or veterinary advice immediately.
