18ct White Gold Rose Cut & Diamond Drop Earrings | ~1ctw | ALPA Backs | French c.1980s
Little drops of starlight--A rare and beautifully made pair of French 18ct white gold drop earrings from the 1980s, fitted with the coveted ALPA locking back system used by Cartier and Van Cleef — and worthy of that company! Six bezel-set rose cut diamonds form a descending line of stars on each earring, leading to a transitional cut brilliant in a classic, hefty white gold buttercup setting (.33cts each drop). The rose cuts are in wonderful antique condition — VS/I2 quality — and the overall diamond weight comes to approximately 1ctw across 12 rose cuts and 2 brilliant drops. The ALPA backs are signed and entirely original: developed by Roland Georges Krahenbuhl in the 1980s, the notched post and spring-loaded locking mechanism became the standard for the finest French jewellery houses precisely because it is so secure. The French eagle hallmark is present on the earring tops. These are earrings built to be worn and enjoyed, and the security of the ALPA system makes that effortless.
