Yozakura (Cherry Blossom at Night) Medaka
The Yozakura Medaka (Japanese name: 夜桜メダカ) is one of the most iconic lamé strains in the hobby — known for its glowing presence in outdoor tubs and tanks under natural light. The name "Yozakura" means "night cherry blossom," and it fits perfectly. This strain features a dark base body overlaid with scattered lamé (sparkling scales), often in shades of silver, gold, or blue. When the light hits just right, the fish shimmer like cherry blossoms under moonlight. Originally developed in Japan through selective breeding of lamé Miyuki lines, the Yozakura is admired for its balance between subtlety and shine. The dark body enhances the contrast, allowing the lamé to pop with every movement. This strain is widely used as a base for further breeding — many well-known lamé lines, including Persimmon-colored or darker variants, trace their origins back to Yozakura. Check the Medaka Encyclopedia for more photos and details on this foundational strain.
