Basha Bekele is a respected coffee producer and exporter based in the Bensa district of Sidama, Ethiopia, and the 2024 Cup of Excellence winner. Working across several collection and drying sites, he partners with 126 registered outgrowers, sourcing carefully selected cherry from farms reaching elevations of up to 2300 masl. His approach is deeply rooted in community, shaped by the influence of his father, a former cooperative manager, and guided by a commitment to long term relationships with the farmers he works with. This commitment is reflected in his practices. Basha pays premium prices for delivered cherry and goes a step further by providing a second payment after the coffee is sold, a rare and meaningful initiative in Ethiopia that supports greater financial stability for producers. Quality is central to every stage of his process. Cherries are selectively handpicked at peak ripeness before undergoing flotation to remove defects, then dried whole on raised African beds under the sun for two to five weeks.
