This coffee takes you to the hills of San Agustín, Colombia. This rare SL-28 lot from Finca El Placer, roasted by The Brick Coffee in Tallinn, is one of the most distinctive washed Colombian filter coffees we've stocked. The Brick Coffee believe in an ethical and sustainable supply chain — sourcing with intention and roasting to let the origin speak clearly in the cup. Pastor Ordoñez is exactly the kind of producer worth knowing about. Grown at 1,800 metres above sea level, this coffee undergoes a meticulous washed process with extended fermentation and slow raised-bed drying. The result is a clean, structured cup with genuine complexity — bright fruit, layered sweetness, and a refined finish. This is a filter roast for those who enjoy fruit-forward coffees with clarity and depth. Expect notes of rhubarb, black currants, pear, and yellow plum. About The Brick Coffee The Brick Coffee is a specialty coffee roastery and brew bar based in Tallinn, Estonia. Their mission is to highlight the best examples of coffee producers in each origin country, introducing region-specific taste profiles and putting the people behind the coffees front and centre. They believe in an ethical and sustainable supply chain — sourcing with care and roasting to bring out the clearest expression of each lot they work with. About the Coffee – Colombia, El Placer This coffee comes from Finca El Placer, farmed by Don Pastor Ordoñez in San Agustín, Huila — a region renowned for altitude-grown, high-quality coffee. We came to know Pastor through the Monkaaba Project, a direct-trade initiative built on fairer prices, transparency, and dignity for producers. Many smallholder farmers in this region still lack access to stable, sustainable markets; Monkaaba was created to change that. This lot is traded directly at significantly above the 2025 regional farmgate price. Over the past 15 years, Pastor has been gradually diversifying his farm, introducing varieties such as Gesha, Papayo, and Pink Bourbon alongside his existing Caturra plantings. This SL-28 lot — around 500 trees planted as a small trial — is part of a deliberate move away from Caturra due to increasing leaf rust pressure. SL-28 is a Kenyan cultivar rarely seen grown in Colombia, which makes this a genuinely unusual and exciting release. What Makes This Coffee Special The processing is where this coffee earns its complexity. Cherries are rested for 8 hours in sealed bags, then held in the depulper hopper for a further 12 hours before depulping. The parchment dry-ferments for 36 hours, is washed 3–5 times, then transferred to raised drying beds — where it dries for 18–30 days under a sliding roof that controls shade and slows the process when needed. Every step is carefully managed to build flavour complexity while preserving a clean, structured cup. What to Expect in the Cup This coffee is bright, fruit-forward, and expressive, with notes of rhubarb, black currants, pear, and yellow plum. Expect a clean washed Colombian filter coffee with lively acidity, natural sweetness, and a long, refined finish. The combination of the rare SL-28 variety and meticulous washed processing creates a cup that is both distinctive and deeply satisfying. Ideal For Pour-over brewing methods Filter coffee brewing Coffee drinkers who enjoy fruit-forward profiles Exploring rare and experimental varieties Showcasing distinctive single-origin coffees Frequently Asked Questions Who roasted this coffee? This coffee was roasted by The Brick Coffee, a specialty roastery and brew bar based in Tallinn, Estonia. They focus on ethical sourcing and highlighting the unique character of each producer they work with. Where is this coffee grown? Finca El Placer is located in San Agustín, in the Huila department of Colombia — a region well known for producing high-quality, altitude-grown coffees. The farm sits at 1,800 metres above sea level, which contributes to the slow cherry development and complex flavour profile. What variety is this coffee? This is SL-28, a cultivar originally developed in Kenya that is very rarely seen grown in Colombia. Pastor Ordoñez planted around 500 trees as a small trial, making this a genuinely limited and unusual lot for a Colombian coffee. What processing method is used? This coffee uses a carefully controlled washed process. Cherries are rested in sealed bags, held in the depulper hopper, and then dry-fermented for 36 hours before being washed multiple times and transferred to raised drying beds for 18–30 days. The process is designed to build flavour complexity while maintaining a clean, structured cup. What brewing methods work best? This coffee is best suited to filter brewing methods, including V60, Kalita Wave, Chemex, and batch brew. It has been roasted specifically for filter, so we'd recommend keeping brew temperatures between 92–96°C and experimenting with a medium-fine grind. What does it taste like? Expect notes of rhubarb, black currants, pear, and yellow plum — a bright, fruit-forward cup with lively acidity, balanced sweetness, and a clean, refined finish. Is this a direct trade coffee? Yes. This lot is sourced directly through the Monkaaba Project, a direct-trade initiative working with smallholder farmers in San Agustín, Colombia. Pastor Ordoñez receives a price significantly above the 2025 regional farmgate average, reflecting the quality of the coffee and the values of both the Monkaaba Project and The Brick Coffee.
