The Hida Express Upcycled Fan
Fabric that didn’t make the final selection, set aside and never intended to be seen. When a longtime collaborator closed its workshop, we took in what remained. "Mottainai" is a Japanese word that expresses a sense of regret when something of value is left unused. We brought this fabric to Hakuchikudo in Kyoto, a fan maker founded in 1718. For over 300 years, its craft has been passed from one artisan to the next. A single fan goes through nearly 80 steps before completion. Through this process, the fabric once overlooked found a new purpose. A journey through the Japanese Alps on the Hida Express, mountains unfolding one after another, rivers and waterfalls appearing briefly, then disappearing from view.
