The article examines the content and development of the Fundamentals of Civil Legislation of the USSR and its Republics of 1991 – the first codification of civil law in modern Russian history, intended to regulate the emerging market economy. Their relationship with other civil laws in force during the perestroika period is analyzed, and the key role of the Fundamentals of 1991 in the development of the new Civil Code of Russia is demonstrated. The article reveals the significant changes they introduced to the previous civil law framework, concerning the subject matter and system of civil law, property law, contract law and law of obligations, as well as the areas of corporate law and intellectual property rights. The conclusion is substantiated regarding the essentially important role of the Fundamentals of 1991 in the process of restoring and subsequently developing private law in the Russian legal system.
