Here is a 2004 Bryan De Gruchy square-neck resonator, a beautifully crafted instrument from one of Australia’s most respected and expressive modern luthiers. Built prior to his passing in 2016, De Gruchy’s instruments are now highly sought after for their tonal richness, craftsmanship, and distinctive voice, with each example representing an important part of Australian resonator building history. This model is based on the Jerry Douglas–inspired Scheerhorn-style design, featuring an open-body, soundpost construction rather than a traditional soundwell. This approach delivers a more spacious, modern resonator tone with strong projection, enhanced sustain, and a deep, articulate low end. It is constructed with mahogany for the top, back, and sides, paired with an ebony bridge and fitted with a USA-made Quarterman cone. This combination produces excellent clarity, strong dynamic response, and a complex, singing sustain that responds beautifully to slide technique and expressive playing. The guitar remains fully player-ready with no structural issues and presents as a lively, open-sounding instrument. It shows a few small bumps and cosmetic marks consistent with honest use, along with a removable felt protection strip fitted to the bass side to prevent slide wear. Playability and response are excellent, offering a highly sensitive and musical feel under the bar with strong tonal separation and depth across all registers. It comes complete with its original alligator-style hard case, adding to its character and collectability. A rare and inspiring Australian-built resonator with outstanding tone, feel, and heritage.
