Later, as a 22 year-old law school drop-out, he worked for Oleg Cassini designing both men’s and women’s wear. He went to work for Cole of California, working out of their Milan offices. While living in Italy, he became interested in the quality and potential of knits. In 1965, he returned to the US to start his own company, Paganne Ltd., soon making his mark with sleek, clean-lined garments featuring dramatic, Pucci-influenced prints. He travelled extensively to Italy to procure knit and woven silks, cottons, and velveteens, but began to lean heavily on fine synthetic knits like Nyesta and Qiana, believing these man-made synthetics would someday replace silk. He sold his company to Printogs in 1967 as a wholly owned subsidiary, remaining in full control of his designs. His distinctive prints underwent an elaborate, multi-step process, starting with a small sketch that was air mailed to Milan or Como, Italy, where skilled craftsmen produced fabric with a silk matte jersey look. From there it became a life-size paper painting, then screens, next a blotter-tested painting of the print, then printed onto a fabric sample. Each step was flown to NY for approval before the next step began. Berk stated, “I create the fabric and the fabric creates the styling of the garment”. (courtesy of VFG).
