No tools are needed, and the pen body, screen, and battery stay exactly as they are. 2 Screw on the ProbePlus Screw the new probe onto the pen body by hand until it is fully seated and snug. Keep the storage cap on until you are ready to hydrate. 3 Hydrate and calibrate Soak the new probe tip in KCl storage solution for 24 hours, then run a 2-point calibration with pH 7.0 and pH 4.0 solution. The ProbePlus is made for the PenPlus, whose probe unscrews from the pen body. The original Bluelab pH Pen has a fixed probe that cannot be replaced, so the ProbePlus will not fit it. If you are not sure which pen you have, call us at 716-217-0353 and we will help you check. How do I know it is time to replace the probe? The usual signs are readings that drift or take a long time to settle, and a pen that will not complete calibration even with fresh pH 7.0 and 4.0 solution. Before you replace it, try cleaning the probe with a Bluelab Probe Care Kit (pH) and recalibrating. If it still will not calibrate, the probe has reached the end of its life and it is time to swap. Do I need any tools to install it? No. The worn probe unscrews from the pen body by hand and the ProbePlus screws on the same way. The only other things you need are KCl storage solution to hydrate the new probe and pH 7.0 and 4.0 solution to calibrate it. Do I have to calibrate after swapping the probe? Yes. Every probe is slightly different, so your pen needs a fresh 2-point calibration (pH 7.0 and pH 4.0) with the new probe attached. Hydrate the probe in KCl solution first, then calibrate. The pen shows a confirmation when calibration is successful, and the 30-day calibration reminder takes care of the rest. How long will the new probe last? With proper care (rinsing after use, storing the tip in KCl solution, and recalibrating monthly), a pH probe typically gives 1 to 2 years of reliable use. Letting the tip dry out is the fastest way to shorten that, so always keep a few drops of KCl in the storage cap. Is the pen included? No. This listing is the replacement probe only.
