About the USM Haller System Between 1962 and 1965 the Swiss architect Fritz Haller and Paul Schärer Jr., who ran the metalworking company USM, developed a furniture system from three parts: chrome-plated steel tubes, a ball connector and flat panels. USM filed the patent for the ball connector in 1965, and the system entered the collection of the Museum of Modern Art in 2001.
