Gretsch G6040MCSS Synchromatic Archtop - Japan 2012

The Synchromatic name goes back to the late 1930s, when Gretsch built some of its grandest archtops under it. The G6040MCSS keeps that tradition alive with a full 17-inch cutaway body, cat’s-eye soundholes and a blonde finish that glows under the lights. It’s a guitar that makes an entrance before you’ve played a note. The craftsmanship is in the detail. The carved solid spruce top sits over laminated flame maple back and sides, with the figure running right across the back, and multiple binding frames the whole body. The bound ebony fingerboard carries split pearl hump block inlays, and the black headstock has the pearl Gretsch logo and Synchromatic script. The gold hardware, the harp tailpiece, the Grover Imperial tuners and the bound tortoise pickguard complete a look that’s equal parts jazz club and golden-era Gretsch. The sound matches the looks. A single High Sensitive Filter’Tron pickup in the neck position gives a warm, clear and articulate tone, with smooth lows, a sweet midrange and the chime that Filter’Tron pickups are known for. It’s a natural fit for jazz, but it also suits blues, rockabilly and country, and the large hollow body gives it a rich acoustic voice even before you plug in. It’s in excellent condition and comes in its original Gretsch hardshell case, which has a deep burgundy plush interior. Few guitars look this elegant on a stand, and fewer sound this warm through an amp.
