Both hands raised, a woman in a rose evening gown by Worth turns her face up to a tiny spider dropping on its thread from a branch of pink leaves and red berries, its web strung above. The gown is patterned in silver scrolls and leaves, draped at the hip and finished in a silver-grey panel at the bodice and a fringe at the hem. She stands at a grey-violet balustrade with a green urn. From 1912 his pochoir plates for the Gazette du Bon Ton, Falbalas et Fanfreluches and the couture houses of Paquin, Worth and Poiret drew on Persian miniatures, Greek vases and the Ballets Russes, setting slender figures against flat, saturated colour. He also designed for the stage and illustrated Verlaine and Louÿs.
