Pure Gigabit Ethernet to Fiber Media Converter, RJ45 to Single-Mode SC Duplex, 1000Base-LX, 20 Kilometer (FMC-006)
This is a pure Gigabit Ethernet media converter that turns a copper RJ45 port into a single-mode fiber link on duplex SC, to 20 kilometers. The copper side is 1000Base-T only, Gigabit on both sides with nothing stepped down, auto-negotiating duplex with auto MDI/MDIX, so it takes a straight or a crossover cable from a Gigabit switch, router, server, or access point without caring which. The fiber side is Gigabit over single-mode on a duplex SC connector, the 1000Base-LX class of link, which reaches across a campus, a town, or a leased metro span. It's unmanaged, with six status LEDs for the copper and fiber ports, a 512K data buffer, a table for up to 1,024 MAC addresses, and built-in lightning protection, and it comes with a 5 V DC power supply. It's sold individually, and it works in pairs for copper at both ends, or singly against a switch that already has a Gigabit single-mode SC port or an LX optic. For the fiber cords, the SCSCSM with SC on both ends, and for SC to an LC switch optic at the far end, the LCSCSM; for the copper side, the C6SB Cat6 patch cord; for the panel the fiber lands on, the FAP-SM-SC-6D LGX plate, or the FOS-SCU-D adapter for a single pair; for Gigabit on multimode, the FMC-010; for Fast Ethernet on single-mode over one strand, the WDM FMC-008, and for a fiber-to-fiber bridge from multimode to single-mode, the FMC-014. What's in the Box FMC-006 media converter 5 V DC power supply Features RJ45 to single-mode SC. 1000Base-T copper to Gigabit fiber, built to the Ethernet standard. 20 kilometers on single-mode. Duplex SC connector on the fiber port; 1000Base-LX class. Pure Gigabit copper port. 1000 Mbps only, full or half duplex, auto MDI/MDIX. Unmanaged. No configuration; plug in and link. Six status LEDs. Optical port and copper port indicators. 512K buffer, 1,024 MAC addresses. Store-and-forward with a full address table. Lightning protection. Built in. 5 V DC power supply included. Sold individually. Where It Fits It suits a campus or a metro link where two buildings are joined on single-mode and the Gigabit switches at each end only have copper ports, so a pair of these carries the link without new switch optics. It suits a building entrance where a carrier or a city hands off a Gigabit circuit on single-mode SC and the inside plant is copper. ISPs and WISP operators use it at a customer premises, and so do utilities, transit agencies, and school districts linking a remote site over a long single-mode strand that's already in the ground. A security head end or a camera cluster fed from a remote structure at Gigabit is a candidate. It goes with the single-mode SC patch cords from the fiber patch cable collection, with the SC adapters, plates, and enclosures from the fiber panel collection, with the Cat6 patch cords from the copper collection, and with the other units in the fiber media converter collection. For the fiber, the SCSCSM, and for SC to LC, the LCSCSM. For the copper, the C6SB. For the panel, the FAP-SM-SC-6D, or the FOS-SCU-D adapter. For multimode, the FMC-010. For one strand at Fast Ethernet, the FMC-008. For multimode to single-mode, the FMC-014. Good to Know Decide how many you need before you order: copper at both ends takes two converters, one at each end of the fiber, while a far end that already has a Gigabit single-mode port or a 1000Base-LX SFP takes one. The fiber port is duplex SC, two fibers in one connector, and the transmit of this unit has to land on the receive of the far one; a standard A-to-B duplex cord does that crossover for you, and if the link won't come up, flip the pair at one end before you look anywhere else. It's single-mode only; the laser is for 9/125 µm fiber, and a multimode cord in the port gives a weak or dead link, so keep the yellow cord on this port and the FMC-010 on the multimode plant. The fiber side is Gigabit only; it won't link to a 100Base-FX port at the far end, so pair it with another Gigabit converter or an LX optic, not with the FMC-012, FMC-013, or FMC-008. It's pure Gigabit: the copper port runs at 1000 Mbps only and won't step down to 100 or 10, so the device plugged into it has to be Gigabit, and an old 100 Mbps camera or controller at the far end needs a switch between it and the converter, or the 10/100 FMC-012 or FMC-013 on multimode instead. The 20 kilometer reach is a rating on a clean loss budget, not a promise about your plant, so run a power meter on a long span before you commit to it, and remember the far-end unit's rating sets the limit too. It's unmanaged, which means nothing to configure and also nothing to log into; the six LEDs are the only diagnostics, so note what each one means on the as-built. The lightning protection is on the unit, not a substitute for grounding the rack and the cable entry. Keep the dust caps on any port without a cord, clean and inspect the ferrules before they go in, and don't look into the port or the cord end while the unit is powered. It usually ships in 3 to 4 business days, so order it with the cords rather than after them.
