These sides are selected for their cleaner surface and give leathercrafters a great starting point for carving, stamping, dyeing, antiquing, and finishing. This is the kind of vegetable-tanned leather you want when the face of the leather is going to become part of the artwork. It takes moisture well for tooling and can be carved, stamped, molded, dyed, oiled, and finished to create everything from detailed decorative work to clean, traditional leather projects. Choose the weight that best fits your project: 3–4 oz.: Approximately 27–32 Sq. Ft. A versatile lighter tooling weight for wallets, notebook covers, small bags, panels, and detailed decorative work. 4–5 oz.: Approximately 27–32 Sq. Ft. A good general-purpose tooling weight with enough body for many wallets, bags, cases, covers, and carved projects. 5–6 oz.: Approximately 27–32 Sq. Ft. Offers more body for projects such as heavier bags, cases, cuffs, panels, and other work where a firmer finished piece is useful. Top Grade refers to the overall cleanliness and appearance of the hide, not a promise that every inch will be completely free of natural character. Cowhide can still show occasional scars, wrinkles, insect marks, or other evidence that it came from an animal. The advantage here is simply that you're starting with some of the cleaner tooling sides we have available. Please Note: Natural vegetable-tanned leather will vary somewhat in color, grain, and surface character from side to side.
