The Big Red The Rolex Daytona has come a long way since its introduction in 1963. The early references featured pump pushers and were powered by the manual-winding Cal. 722, which eventually evolved into the improved Cal. 727, operating at a higher frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The introduction of the Ref. 6263 in the early 1970s marked an important chapter in the Daytona's history. With its screw-down pushers, Oyster case and distinctive black acrylic bezel, it brought a more robust and sporty character to the model. The reference remained in production until 1988 and has arguably been the most popular and sought-after vintage Daytona reference ever since. Among its various dial configurations, the Big Red has always been a collector favourite. Introduced around the mid-1970s, it takes its nickname from the prominent red DAYTONA lettering above the hour register at 6 o'clock. Paired with the silver dial and contrasting black registers, it is one of the most recognisable and attractive combinations of the entire vintage Daytona family. Our example is a particularly well-preserved 6263, featuring an excellent silver Big Red dial with floating Daytona and a very strong stainless steel case with long, well-defined lugs. The correct black acrylic bezel is in excellent condition, while the watch retains the correct screw-down pushers. The 6263 is a watch that hardly needs an introduction, but finding a good, honest example with the right details and this level of preservation is what makes all the difference. A great example of one of Rolex's most celebrated vintage chronographs.
