The Universal Genève Polerouter already has one of the great origin stories in mid-century watchmaking. Designed by a remarkably young Gérald Genta, the watch debuted in 1954 as the Polarouter, created to commemorate Scandinavian Airlines System’s pioneering polar-route flights between Europe and North America. Flying over the North Pole dramatically shortened the journey, but also exposed instruments to unusually strong magnetic fields, making reliable, antimagnetic timekeeping particularly important. This Polerouter de Luxe Ref. B10234 takes that fascinating foundation to a considerably more exotic place. Housed in a substantial 35mm 18K gold case, the De Luxe was the elevated expression of the Polerouter, with sculpted lugs, a thin bezel, and more luxurious case and dial treatments. But the dial here is anything but standard. Instead of Universal Genève branding, the gold-toned dial bears a portrait of King Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, who ruled Saudi Arabia from 1953 until 1964, at 12 o’clock, with his name rendered in Arabic script above 6. These so-called “Saudi dials” belong to a fascinating tradition of specially commissioned Swiss watches produced for Middle Eastern royalty, governments, and dignitaries. In this instance, the almost complete absence of conventional branding makes the watch particularly striking. Without the Universal Genève signature, the portrait becomes the visual centerpiece, surrounded by a contrasting outer chapter ring with applied gold hour markers and sharp dauphine hands. Inside is Universal Genève’s 17-jewel Calibre 138SS, an automatic “bumper” movement in which the oscillating weight travels through a limited arc rather than rotating a full 360 degrees. It represents an earlier chapter of Universal Genève’s automatic development, preceding the celebrated micro-rotor movements that would become closely associated with later Polerouters. The combination is extraordinary: an early Genta design, the golden age of commercial aviation, Universal Genève’s evolving automatic technology, and a dial tied to mid-century Saudi royal patronage, all contained within a beautifully proportioned gold dress watch. This 1950s example is paired with a black leather strap and gold-tone pin buckle. Even among collectible Polerouters, this is an unusual one. The Polerouter story alone has secured the model a place in watchmaking history; the King Saud dial turns this example into something closer to a historical artifact.
