Toshiyuki Kita 'Kick' Adjustable Side Table for Cassina, Italy 1983
An original vintage example of the 'Kick' adjustable side table, designed by Japanese industrial designer Toshiyuki Kita for Cassina in 1983. Conceived as a companion to Kita's iconic 'Wink' lounge chair, the Kick table embodies the designer's interest in adaptable furniture and the relationship between movement, function and form. The asymmetrical black lacquered wooden top is supported by a slender, height-adjustable metal column. Its distinctive grey steel base incorporates two spherical castors, giving the table both mobility and a playful sculptural character. The tabletop can also rotate, allowing flexible positioning beside a lounge chair or sofa. Kita developed the design at Cassina's Italian design department, where an initial freehand drawing was rapidly translated into a working prototype. The resulting table is a characteristic example of the experimental collaboration between Japanese designers and Italian furniture manufacturers during the early 1980s. In 1984, the Kick table was acquired for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York.
