Antique Cast Iron Fireplace Thomas Jeckyll with Minton Tiles | Bishop & Barnards

A rare Victorian Aesthetic Movement cast iron fireplace insert, designed in the Anglo-Japanese taste by Thomas Jeckyll (1827–1881) for Barnard, Bishop & Barnards of Norwich. Jeckyll’s designs for Barnard, Bishop & Barnards and the celebrated tiles of Minton Hollins were both at the forefront of the British Aesthetic Movement, making their combination in this fireplace particularly special. The flat cast iron façade is characteristically decorated with finely reeded borders and a striking central panel of geometric fretwork interspersed with Japanese-inspired mon roundels. The fireplace retains eight highly decorative blue and white Minton bird tiles, arranged as four matching pairs and depicting birds amongst nests, branches, berries and foliage. Produced at Stoke-on-Trent during the Aesthetic Movement the designs are considered most likely to be by John Windsor Bradburn. Dimensions 81.5cm Wide x 91.5cm High Dimensions are approximate
