Starburst Discosoma Mushroom, Discosoma sp., is a corallimorph known for its broad fleshy disc, textured surface, and vivid coloration. This WYSIWYG coral frag displays a striking red to orange disc covered with dense raised vesicles and subtle radial patterning, creating the starburst appearance reflected in its trade name. Discosoma mushrooms are photosynthetic and contain symbiotic zooxanthellae that provide much of their nutritional needs, though they may also absorb dissolved nutrients and capture very small suspended foods. As they mature, Discosoma mushrooms can enlarge considerably and may reproduce by pedal laceration or division, gradually forming small colonies. Because species-level identification cannot be confirmed reliably from external appearance alone, Discosoma sp. is the most scientifically appropriate designation for this specimen.
