The male Blue Throat Fairy Wrasse, Cirrhilabrus cyanogularis, is a brilliantly colored saltwater fish distinguished by its warm orange to red-orange body and intense electric-blue coloration across the throat, lower head, and breast. Mature males develop especially dramatic contrast, with elongated pelvic fins and colorful dorsal, anal, and caudal fins accented by blue, violet, and darker markings. During courtship or territorial displays, these colors can intensify considerably, making the species an eye-catching addition to a reef aquarium. Although adults remain relatively compact at approximately 4 inches, this is an active species that benefits from room to cruise above and around the aquascape. Arrange live rock to provide caves, overhangs, and narrow crevices where the wrasse can retreat when startled and rest at night. Unlike sand-burying wrasses, Cirrhilabrus species normally shelter within reef structure, so a deep sand bed is not required. Moderate water movement, good oxygenation, efficient filtration, and stable water quality are ideal. Open areas above the rockwork allow the fish to display its natural plankton-feeding and swimming behavior. A tightly fitted mesh or solid aquarium cover is essential. Fairy wrasses are accomplished jumpers and can escape through surprisingly small openings around plumbing, cables, and equipment.
