SMSL H200 Headphone Amplifier & Preamplifier
SMSL H200 Balanced Headphone Amplifier & Preamplifier Power, Precision & Exceptional Value The SMSL H200 is a powerful fully balanced desktop headphone amplifier and analogue preamplifier, combining extremely low distortion and noise with up to 6 watts of output power — giving it the flexibility to drive everything from sensitive headphones to demanding planar magnetics. ✔ Fully balanced headphone amplifier architecture ✔ Up to 6W × 2 output power ✔ Ultra-low 0.00006% THD+N ✔ 133dB signal-to-noise ratio ✔ XLR balanced and RCA analogue inputs ✔ 4-pin XLR, 4.4mm balanced and 6.35mm headphone outputs ✔ Three gain levels for different headphone sensitivities ✔ Dedicated analogue preamplifier functionality ✔ Remote control included The SMSL H200 is built around a simple idea: provide enormous headphone-driving capability without sacrificing the low noise, transparency and precision required by modern high-resolution headphones. With up to 6 watts per channel available, the H200 has substantially more power than a conventional desktop headphone output and enough reserve for many difficult planar-magnetic and high-impedance headphones. Power alone, however, isn't what makes the H200 interesting. Its amplifier circuitry achieves exceptionally low distortion and a 133dB signal-to-noise ratio, allowing fine detail, spatial information and low-level dynamics to emerge from a remarkably clean background. Add balanced and single-ended inputs, three headphone connections, selectable gain and analogue preamplifier outputs and the H200 becomes much more than a headphone amplifier. It can form the analogue control centre of a complete desktop or two-channel audio system. Up to 6 Watts of Headphone Power The H200 provides up to 6W × 2 of headphone output, giving it substantial reserves for headphones that can expose the limitations of smaller portable and desktop amplifiers. This is particularly useful with demanding planar-magnetic headphones, where additional current capability and amplifier headroom can improve dynamics, bass control and the sense of effortlessness at higher listening levels. For easier-to-drive headphones, the H200's selectable gain system allows output to be reduced appropriately rather than forcing every headphone to operate from the same high-gain amplifier setting. Fully Balanced Amplifier Architecture SMSL employs a fully balanced amplifier design with precision circuitry engineered for extremely low noise and distortion. The H200 provides balanced XLR analogue inputs for use with balanced DACs alongside conventional RCA inputs, making it easy to integrate into virtually any desktop system. For headphone connection, the front panel provides 4-pin XLR, 4.4mm and 6.35mm outputs, supporting a broad range of modern headphone cables without requiring unnecessary adapters. Sound Performance Transparency The H200 is designed to get out of the way of the source and headphones. Its extremely low distortion produces a clean and neutral presentation without deliberately adding warmth or brightness. Bass Control The substantial output stage provides excellent authority and control, particularly with planar headphones that respond well to an amplifier with generous current capability. Detail & Resolution With THD+N specified as low as 0.00006%, the H200 preserves subtle information from the source rather than obscuring it beneath amplifier noise or coloration. Dynamics The generous power reserve gives music excellent dynamic freedom. Large transients can be reproduced without the amplifier feeling strained, while quieter passages retain fine low-level information. Three Gain Levels Not every headphone needs enormous power, so the H200 provides three selectable gain levels to better accommodate headphones with very different sensitivity requirements. Low Gain: For sensitive headphones and lower listening levels Medium Gain: Suitable for a wide range of conventional dynamic and planar headphones High Gain: Provides additional voltage and output capability for demanding headphones This gives the H200 much greater flexibility than an amplifier designed solely around difficult high-power headphones. Headphone Amplifier & Preamplifier The H200 can also operate as a dedicated analogue preamplifier, allowing the same volume control and input selection to be used with a power amplifier or active loudspeakers. This makes it particularly attractive for desktop systems where headphones and speakers share the same DAC and source equipment. Pair the H200 with a high-quality standalone DAC and it can become the central analogue control stage for both headphone and loudspeaker listening. An Excellent Partner for a Dedicated DAC Unlike an all-in-one DAC/headphone amplifier, the H200 concentrates on analogue amplification. This gives users the freedom to choose a DAC based entirely on the performance, features and sonic presentation they prefer. Its balanced XLR inputs make it particularly well suited to SMSL's own balanced DACs as well as high-performance DACs from other manufacturers, providing a straightforward upgrade path as the rest of the system evolves.
