Sissinghurst's Quiet Vine

There is a particular calm that belongs to walled gardens in late summer, green gone heavy with shade, the borders just beginning to curl at the edges. Here, that calm settles flat across the floor: a deep, mossed green stretches the length of the room, broken only by a cream border that loosens at each corner into a small, looping vine, as if the garden itself had reached in to leave its mark. Hand-tufted by the weavers of Jodhpur, the wool sits low and even, the green kept matte so the eye settles rather than searches. Beneath a Georgian cornice, or against the flat hush of a concrete ceiling, its restraint holds a room together rather than filling it. In a Chelsea garden room, the green outside echoing the green underfoot, the floor and the garden agree to share the same colour.
