Gerard Havekes — Set of Three Side Tables, c. 1960s. Commissioned piece
A rare and early example of work by Dutch-Australian artist Gerard Havekes (1925–2011), this set of three side tables represents a significant departure from his well-known ceramic tile furniture. Rather than his signature hand-glazed ceramic tiles, the tops feature individually hand-worked brass/copper plates inset into solid Blackwood timber tops — each plate uniquely textured and composed, making this a genuinely sculptural commission. The three tables are designed to be used together or independently. Tops and brass plates are in excellent condition and retain their original patina. The brass-finished metal frames show surface corrosion and wear consistent with their age — buyers seeking pristine condition should note this. Havekes’ work is highly collectable and he is an increasingly sought-after artist whose work continues to appreciate. Pieces of this medium and this early a date have in our understanding never before come to market.
