Biography Okayama Takakage (1866-1945) Born in Atsuta, Owari (present-day Nagoya City) in 1866. His personal name was Yoshitaro and his other art name was Waun. He was active as a calligrapher and waka poet, studying calligraphy under Tsunekawa Tokoku and later under Iwaya Ichiroku. He researched both Chinese-style and Japanese-style calligraphy and established a powerful and highly original kana style. He also served at the Imperial Poetry Bureau and held positions including lecturer at Kokugakuin University, academic advisor to the Taito Shodoin, and special member of the institution. His publications include Takakage Hyakushu, Takakage Senshu, and Nihon Shodo Kenkyu. He died in 1945.
