Watches came much later, but they eventually became an important part of Gucci’s transformation from a fashion house into a full luxury lifestyle brand. Gucci entered the watch market seriously during the 1970s. Unlike traditional Swiss watchmakers that focused primarily on horology, Gucci approached watches as fashion luxury accessories. A major turning point came in 1972, when Gucci opened a watchmaking division in La Chaux-de-Fonds — one of the historic centers of Swiss watchmaking. This allowed Gucci watches to legally carry the “Swiss Made” designation. The early strategy was: Swiss quartz reliability Strong fashion identity Affordable luxury positioning Distinctive Gucci styling The watches quickly became commercially successful. One of the most important early models was the Gucci 2000 series, designed by Severin Wunderman. Wunderman helped transform Gucci watches into a global business phenomenon. The Gucci 2000 became extremely popular because it combined: Minimalist elegance Swiss quartz movements Luxury branding Relatively accessible pricing During the 1980s, Gucci watches became status symbols, especially in the United States and Asia. At one point, Gucci watches reportedly accounted for a huge percentage of the global fashion-watch market. Perhaps the most iconic Gucci watch of the 1980s was the Gucci 11/12 “Bezel Watch.” Features included: Interchangeable colored bezels Slim bangle-style case Swiss quartz movement Fashion-forward design Owners could swap bezel colors to match outfits, making it one of the defining fashion watches of the decade. Today, vintage Gucci bezel watches remain highly collectible and are strongly associated with 1980s luxury fashion culture. The Gucci family business went through severe internal disputes during the 1980s. Counterfeiting also became a massive problem. In the 1990s, Gucci underwent a major restructuring under Tom Ford and executive Domenico De Sole. This period revived Gucci as a high-fashion luxury powerhouse. Gucci watches also became more upscale in styling and branding during this era. Kering eventually gained control of Gucci. Under Kering, Gucci expanded its luxury positioning further. Modern Gucci watches are still Swiss-made and are produced through Gucci’s Swiss watch division.
