Red Moroccan Boucherouite Rug
Overview: This wide runner is woven in the boucherouite style using cotton, wool, and recycled materials. There's a lot to say about this piece! On the one hand, it has an unusual shape, where one end flares out a bit. At its narrowest, it measures 32" across and at its widest, it measures 36". It is common to find size variations in older, vintage rugs that were woven on wooden looms. On the part that flares out, we're also drawn to the color change-- all of a sudden, the red base of the rug gives way to a yellow background color and at the part where the two colors meet, the design changes abruptly. To the outside eye, this may look like a grave error. It could have been that the artisans set out to weave one rug, and then changed her mind a few inches into it. Or it could be an example of how artisans weave inconsistencies into the rug on purpose. Weavers will do this as a way to ward off the evil eye. This is based on the notion that only Allah is perfect and in order to avoid the envy of their neighbors, they will intentionally weave "errors" into the rug. At the end of the day, we welcome these touches of the artisan's creativity, knowing that it just adds to the charm of the rug! The final part of this rug that calls our attention is the human figure in the middle, above the hand symbol. Figural representation is rare in Islamic art, and we absolutely love it whenever we find them hidden in Moroccan rugs!
