BHB Dettling Barrel #685
This barrel is a 53-month-old True Single Oak Bourbon aged in a Kelvin Standard Toast / #3 Char barrel, creating a flavor profile that is incredibly unique and unlike anything we’ve picked before. At the time of selection, it was sitting at 126.0 proof, which may make it the highest-proof bourbon ever bottled by Dettling. We’ll have to see exactly where it lands once the bottling process is complete. 👀 What immediately stood out was the texture. This bourbon has a massive, highly viscous mouthfeel with an intensely oily character that completely coats the palate. Thick, weighty, and almost chewy at times, it carries flavor from the front of the tongue all the way through the finish. 👃 Nose 🍇 Fig and dark fruit 🍫 Dark chocolate 📚 Dusty library oak 🍬 Toffee and caramel sweetness 🚬 Hints of tobacco 🥃 Palate 🍫 Dark chocolate 🍒 Red fruit 🍮 Crème brûlée sweetness ☕ Light coffee notes 🍿 A little Cracker Jacks and caramel popcorn The richness is incredible, but it’s the balance between the fruit, oak, sweetness, and texture that really makes this barrel special. 🔥 Finish Sweet oak, lingering chocolate, and a finish that just refuses to quit. The flavors continue evolving long after the sip is gone. 🥃 Empty Glass Soft leather, light tobacco, caramel popcorn, and lingering sweetness that keeps pulling you back for another pour.
