Heritage: the hand that started it all In the early 1950s, a watchmaker in Geneva needed a way to make an hour hand visible to a diver thirty meters down, in a dim blue-green murk where the rest of the dial blurred into the water. He stripped the hand back to its lumed core and then framed it inside a circle — a halo of luminous paint, with three small bars projecting from the center like the points of a compass. From the outside, it looked like a tiny Mercedes-Benz emblem. The name stuck. Seventy years later, that exact hand is still the gold standard for legibility underwater. We chose it for the Redline Mercedes Edition because it does what good watch design is supposed to do — it gets out of the way and tells you what time it is, even when you’re not really looking. The red minute track around the dial is our nod to the same era. Vintage divers used a contrasting red sweep to let pilots, navigators, and underwater workers count off elapsed seconds at a glance. The hand is a hand-finished part installed by our workshop on a Seiko NH35 movement. It’s an honest mod — built to spec with proper tolerances, not a cosmetic glue-on. How accurate is it? The NH35 movement runs at ±20 sec/day stock; we regulate every Redline Mercedes piece to within ±10 sec/day before it ships. Will it survive everyday wear? Yes.
