City Lines and Colors: An Urban Sketching Workshop

Step outside and capture the energy of your surroundings in this immersive two-day urban sketching workshop. Designed for beginners and early-intermediate artists, participants will learn how to begin a sketch, develop it with confidence, and compose a visually engaging spread using multiple sketches. Working on location, you will draw inspiration from the environment while exploring sketching techniques with pencil and pen. You’ll also learn how to enhance your sketches with watercolor washes, adding depth, color, and atmosphere. The workshop covers essential principles such as tonal values, perspective, and simple composition, giving you the tools to structure your drawings effectively. Through guided exercises and hands-on practice, you will build confidence in capturing the character of urban landscapes, from architecture and street scenes to everyday details. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a collection of sketches demonstrating both skill and personal expression, ready to continue sketching beyond the workshop. Workshop Date: Friday June 19th and Saturday June 20th, 9.30 am - 4.30pm (lunch break: 12.30-1.30pm) Workshop Type: Outdoor on-location at Minneapolis Sculpture Garden Skill Level: Beginner or early intermediate Workshop Supplies and Meals: Pens will be provided as part of the workshop fee. Other supplies’ list will be emailed to participants when they are registered. Participants are responsible for their own lunch and beverage. Cancellation Policy: Before May 19th: All cancellations will be subject to a $50 administration fee. A full refund (less $50 administration fee) will apply to cancellations by the May 19th cut-off date. After May 19th: If a cancellation is received after May 19th, and the space CAN be refilled, a full refund less the $50 administration fee will be refunded (Possible wait list for workshop or workshop participant can find replacement). If a cancellation is received after May 19th, and the space CANNOT be filled, 50% of the workshop fee will be refunded (less $50 administration fee). If the workshop has less than 10 students registered two weeks prior to the start of the workshop, the instructor reserves the right to cancel the workshop and a full refund will be awarded. All participants please note: There will be no partial refunds given and there will be no shared registration without the instructor’s consent.
