Lecturer: Kate Hendry Sat 2 May to Sat 13 Jun 10.00am – 12.30pm Teens: (Year levels 9 to 12) This beginner friendly course is designed for senior secondary students (Years 9 to 12) who are keen to develop and refine their oil painting skills. Students will learn safe studio practices for working with oil paints and how to use low-toxic solvents. They will explore tonal scales and colour theory, and gain confidence in mixing colours using a limited palette. They will learn about traditional and contemporary oil painting techniques through guided exercises and individual support. Students will complete studies in greyscale and colour before beginning their own painting from a reference image of their choosing, with guidance and personalised advice from the lecturer. This course will equip students with the fundamental skills to complete their own projects in oil paint. It is perfect for students finalising their SACE Visual Arts folio and working towards their practical project. Materials List Brushes hog hair or synthetic equivalent, flat size 2, 4, 6 (ensure students bring appropriate brushes for oil painting, please consult local art shops e.g. Duthy Art and Central Artist supplies) 1 x canvas or canvas board Size 14 x 18” A3 Oil Sketch Pad 2 x small jar 1 x rag 1 x painting palette (wooden or disposable A4 palette) Palette knife Apron or Painting clothes Journal (writing pens, pencils) Reference Image for personal painting project (week 3) Oil paint colours will be provided for this course Optional: You can bring oil paints if you already have some at home Kate Hendry is an emerging artist working on Kaurna Land/ Adelaide. Hendry received her Bachelor of Visual Art in 2024. As a self described, “unreliable narrator” her oil paintings explore the domestic, the intimate and the mundane. Her figurative work utilises traditional tonal realist techniques to explore contemporary narratives. In 2024, she was a finalist in the Kennedy Painting Prize. Since graduating, Kate has been awarded a 12 Month Residency at Floating Goose Studios and has undertaken an international studio residency in Skagaströnd, Iceland.
