2026 OVERNIGHT Ride 3 - August 11-13 (Tue-Thurs) - GRAND RAPIDS Mesabi Trail (EASY) - Miles vary
This three day event will be based out of Grand Rapids. All rides will start and end near Grand Rapids. All lodging and meals are the responsibility of the individual riders. NOTE: Each rider please register individually. RENTERS: Pedego eBike Rental $150 for bike, transportation, helmet. We will be traversing the Mississippi trail segment of the Mesabi Trail. Approximately 80-90 miles over two days. Be sure to buy your Wheel Pass. $10 – *Three-day pass You can purchase on line (https://store.mesabitrail.com/product/wheel-pass/), at vendors along the trail or from access point self-pay boxes in Grand Rapids, Bovey, Calumet, Keewatin, Hibbing or Buhl. TOUR START DAY 1: 1:00 PM This tour (40-45 miles round trip) starts and ends in Grand Rapids. Meet at the Itasca County Fairgrounds, 1336 Fairgrounds Road, Grand Rapids, MN 55744. Direct Trail access and parking are located at the north end of the Itasca County Fairgrounds parking lot, look for yellow the Mesabi Trail entry point archway. We will ride until we want to turnaround - and then Day 2 will start near there and continue north. 40-45 miles. There will be options to stop but be sure to bring extra water and an energy snack or two as options are limited. GRAND RAPIDS TO MCKINLEY The longest continuous stretch of 79 miles runs from Grand Rapids to McKinley. This section offers multiple spurs, including to the Minnesota Discovery Center and the Redhead Mountain Bike Park in Chisholm, and another from Gilbert to the Mesabi Station Trailhead in Eveleth, and on to Fayal Township. One of the many spectacular features along this section is crossing the Representative Thomas Rukavina Memorial Bridge just outside of Virginia. The Mesabi Trail takes up 14 feet of one side of the tallest bridge in Minnesota…the view is incredible! We will return to Grand Rapids to check in at our accommodations, relax, and convene at a restaurant of our choice to meet our fellow bikers. With breweries and many restaurants to choose from, there is something for everyone. TOUR START DAY 2: 11:00 AM In the morning, get breakfast and load your bike and supplies. Drive to yesterday's trail end at a predetermined location on the trail. From there, we will continue west until we decide to turn around! 40-45 miles. A final opportunity to find a great restaurant and visit with old and new friends! DAY 3 - if you still want to ride before leaving Mesabi, we can discuss options! Mesabi Trail **The 2024 Mesabi Trail Map can be found and downloaded here.** The Mesabi Trail is a 10ft wide, paved (asphalt) bicycle trail. Ideal for biking, walking, hiking and running. Stretching from the Mississippi to the Boundary Waters, with almost 150 miles of paved trail, the Mesabi Trail is like no other in the country. Cutting through the forests of northeast Minnesota, your adventure will take you past lakes, creeks and ponds, by vast red pits of old iron ore mines now filled with emerald green water.
