Titles: “CXCIII” Description: Very decorative woodcut depicting the ecclesiastical building, likely a monastery or church associated with the Order of Canons Regular. Also presenting the portraits of the famous Persian physician and scholar Al-Razi (Rhazes) and Matilda of Tuscany, an influential powerful woman in medieval Italy. Verso, several Popes and associated historical events deplicted. Pope Gregory VII (Gregorius septimus), featured at the top, a major figure of the medieval papacy known for the Investiture Controversy. Pope Victor III (Victor tercius), the second portrait down. Pope Urban II (Urbanus secundus), famously known for initiating the First Crusade. Comes from Hartmann Schedel’s the Latin edition of the “Liber chronicarum” published in 1493. Page number CXCIII. The Nuremberg Chronicles was the first printed history of the known world with about 2000 woodcuts the most picturesque work of the early time of printing. It became one of the most popular books of the 15th. century. The woodblock cutters were Michael Wolgemut, teacher of Albrecht Dürer and his stepson Wilhelm Pleydenwurff. The printing was carried out under the supervision of the great scholar-printer Anton Koberger.
