When to Replace Replace the filter at the interval specified in the equipment service schedule, or when servicing the engine oil. A clogged or worn filter can contribute to dark, gritty oil, restricted oil flow, seepage around the filter base, and increased internal engine wear. Ethanol-related fuel contamination, poor maintenance, and extended service intervals can accelerate oil contamination.
