Vintage African Carved Wood Statue, 9.5" Yoruba Style Crouching Figure A beautifully detailed, vintage hand-carved African tribal sculpture depicting a stylized crouched human figure. The piece features a striking combination of regional styles, most notably the prominent, bulging almond eyes and tall conical headdress iconic to Yoruba craftsmanship (frequently associated with the deity Eshu), merged with a compressed, hunched posture reminiscent of classic Central African carvings. Carved from a single piece of dense hardwood, the figure rests on an integrated circular base. It displays a rich, weathered dark-brown patina that adds excellent depth, character, and visual age to the sculpture. Perfect for collectors of tribal art, global decor, or unique mid-century modern accents. It has 4 intentional holes in the bandelier and a hole in each hand. Provenance: John R. Rohner Collection Rohner, a museum curator for decades, aimed his practiced eye for authenticity to African art beginning in the early 1980s. His passion for this art only grew through the decades he built his collection––always with an aim for a broad and representative array of pieces. The collection appears in his book, Art Treasures from African Runners (2000, University Press of Colorado). Item #711 on pg. 251 Crack in the pointed hat.
