CIC 44 InVerto
The movement, brought to the front The Lederer CIC 44 InVerto is one of Bernhard Lederer’s most uncompromising expressions of contemporary independent watchmaking. Rather than concealing its mechanical architecture beneath a conventional dial, the InVerto reverses the traditional hierarchy of the wristwatch: the movement itself becomes the face of the watch. The concept originated from Lederer’s celebrated Central Impulse Chronometer, a movement inspired by the chronometric work of Abraham-Louis Breguet and George Daniels. For the InVerto, however, Lederer did far more than simply turn the calibre over. Its architecture was reworked so that the two independent gear trains, twin barrels, constant-force remontoires and central-impulse escapement could be observed directly from the wrist, without compromising the movement’s chronometric purpose. Presented within a 44 mm black DLC-treated 904L stainless-steel case, the result is strikingly architectural. There is no traditional dial. Instead, the blackened bridges frame the calibre itself, punctuated by polished and gilded components and the rhythmic operation of the two constant-force mechanisms. The hour markers are incorporated into the domed sapphire crystal, allowing the mechanics to remain almost completely unobstructed. At its heart is the manually wound Calibre CIC 9018, built around two independent barrels and gear trains feeding two escapement wheels. Each train incorporates a constant-force remontoire, regulating the delivery of energy to Lederer’s central-impulse escapement. The movement beats at 3 Hz and is chronometer certified, combining an unusually theatrical display with a fundamentally serious pursuit of precision. Produced in a strictly limited edition of 18 pieces, the CIC 44 InVerto represents the more radical side of Lederer’s work: a watch in which the mechanism is no longer something to discover through the caseback, but the defining visual identity of the timepiece itself.
