The same plant gives very different oils. Many of you will remember Benchmark Thyme: Maggie Tisserand’s blend of four thyme cultivars, and for years the thyme at the heart of our Super Immune™. When we could no longer get it, an ordinary thyme oil wouldn’t do. So we made our own. We went back to Benchmark’s chromatogram and rebuilt it from three chemotypes of Thymus vulgaris, from growers and distillers we trust. It comes remarkably close, and we’re still chasing the last of it. The Formula Three thymes. One profile. Thymol+Linalool+Thujanol=Special Thyme™ Thymol Linalool Terpinen-4-ol Benchmark Thyme 31% 24% 12% Special Thyme™ 27% 20% 2% Benchmark Thyme as published by the University of Brighton; Special Thyme™ from our current batch. Essential oils of Thymus vulgaris ct. thymol, ct. linalool and ct. thujanol. Undiluted. Formulation Logic Each of the three is a chemotype: a natural chemical type of Thymus vulgaris, with its own chemistry and its own scent. Thymol thyme is the strong one, with the deepest laboratory research history of the three. Linalool thyme is the same plant with a softer chemistry, and in laboratory testing it still showed antibacterial activity. Thujanol thyme adds a third profile of its own. Blended together, they rebuild the thymol–linalool balance Benchmark Thyme was known for. How We Use It Diffusion Use sparingly. Special Thyme™ is concentrated and assertive; a small amount is generally sufficient. Personal Inhalation Use in an appropriately prepared personal inhaler. In Formulation Incorporate into your own essential-oil formulations where several expressions of thyme chemistry are wanted. Topical Formulation Dilute before any topical use, and keep the dilution conservative: the formula contains thymol-rich thyme. Aromatic Character Strong, dry and herbaceous, with the characteristic intensity of thymol-rich thyme moderated by the softer aromatic character of the linalool and thujanol chemotypes. Questions & Answers Before you buy QIs Special Thyme™ the same as Benchmark Thyme? Not exactly. Benchmark Thyme was four cultivars of Thymus zygis. Special Thyme™ is three chemotypes of Thymus vulgaris, blended to Benchmark’s profile. The thymol and linalool come close. The α-terpinene and terpinen-4-ol are still short, and we’re still searching for the thyme that closes the gap. QWhy not just buy a single thyme oil? A single thyme oil gives you one chemotype. If you want only the strongest thymol thyme, one oil will do. Special Thyme™ gives you three, in proportions matched to Benchmark Thyme, already blended. Notes & Cautions Special Thyme™ is a highly concentrated essential-oil formulation. Do not apply undiluted to the skin. Thymol-rich thyme can irritate skin and mucous membranes at inappropriate concentrations. Avoid eyes and mucous membranes. Do not add undiluted essential oils directly to bath water. Use conservatively in diffusion. Children: Keep away from young children. This is a concentrated aromatic formulation. We do not recommend diffusing it in bedrooms occupied by young children. Consult your naturopath or physician. Seek qualified guidance during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or when medications or specific medical considerations are involved. Special Thyme™ is not a tested household disinfectant, and laboratory results on thyme materials should not be read as claims for surface or household use. For external aromatic and appropriately diluted topical use only. Store tightly closed away from heat and direct light. See Safety & Responsible Use for Ananda's general essential-oil guidance. Special Thyme™ or Super Immune™? Choose Special Thyme™ when you want the thyme on its own, for diffusion, personal aromatic use or your own formulations. Choose Super Immune™ when you want Special Thyme™ already blended with Eucalyptus Narrow Leaf, Rosalina, Ravintsara, Bay Laurel, Pine Needle, Lavender and Melissa. Lineage Benchmark Thyme was Maggie Tisserand’s four-cultivar Thymus zygis blend. At the University of Brighton it inhibited and killed Staphylococcus aureus, including MRSA, in laboratory testing.
