Red Egyptian Walking Onions
Egyptian Walking Onion is a cold-hardy, low-maintenance perennial onion. Unlike conventional bulb onions, which are typically grown as annual crops, Egyptian walking onions can remain productive for many years. The entire plant is edible. The hollow green leaves can be harvested like green onions or scallions and are among the earliest greens available in spring, often overwintering above ground in mild climates. The young green leaves taste similar to green onions or scallions, with a fairly pronounced onion flavour. The plant's underground bulbs are stronger and more pungent than conventional onions, often resembling small shallots. The aerial bulbils have a concentrated, sharp onion flavour and are excellent for pickling, cooking, or finely chopping into dishes. Instead of producing seeds, Egyptian walking onions develops clusters of miniature onions, called bulbils, at the tops of its stalks. As these mature and become heavier, the stalks lean to the side, eventually bending toward the ground, allowing the bulbils to take root, and the plant to gradually "walk" across the garden. Egyptian walking onions are not invasive, do not spread aggressively and are easy to remove. The plants also multiply underground, forming clumps that can be divided and replanted. Extremely cold-hardy and easy to grow, Egyptian walking onions are an excellent addition to perennial vegetable gardens and food forests. Once established, they can provide years of harvests with minimal maintenance. Common names: Egyptian Walking Onion, Walking Onion, Tree Onion, Topset Onion Edible: The whole plant is edible, including leaves, underground bulbs and aerial bulbils Harvest timing: Early spring - autumn Scientific name: Allium × proliferum Light requirements: Full sun, but tolerates light shade Full-grown size: 2-3' tall x 1-2' wide (taller when flowering) Hardiness: Zone 3 Pollination: Pollination not required. Wildlife: Generally resistant to deer and rabbits. Origin: Despite their name, Egyptian walking onions are not known to have originated in Egypt. They are believed to be an ancient cultivated hybrid between the common onion (Allium cepa) and Welsh onion (Allium fistulosum). Their precise geographic origin is uncertain. Noteworthy: Early spring harvests. Entire plant is edible. A true perennial onion.
