[a cap Q cut by Philip Surey]

What a pleasure are hand-cut letters. This one was cut by Philip Surey, a 1996 graduate of the City & Guilds of London Art School who later assisted Richard Kindersley and Ralph Beyer in their shops before going out on his own as a sculptor and letter carver. (We keep an alphabet carved by Phil above our desk.) Now, this totally wild cap Q was carved with no purpose save for to see what would happen when the brushstrokes used to make cap Q were maintained and emphasized. And then along the right he was experimenting with the same approach to a cap E—but on the edge. A feral letter carved with total control in Portland Basebed. (That’s a type of stone.)
