Jadeite Bi Disc Pendant, Moss-in-Snow, 14K Gold, Mid-Century
This is a distinguished jadeite bi pendant, custom-crafted in the mid-century style and dating to the mid-to-late 1950s. The bi, a flat disc with a central opening, is among the oldest forms in Chinese jade carving and traditionally stands for heaven, protection and good fortune. This is natural, untreated jadeite of excellent translucency, nearly transparent in places. Its white body carries light wisps of green, the moss-in-snow effect, and the stone glows when it catches the light. It is framed in 14k yellow gold with a finely milled edge. Above it sits an openwork 14k headpiece of interlocking rings, 40mm by 16mm, set with a spray of jade cabochons in soft greens, oranges and reds. Every accent is natural, untreated jadeite except the single black cabochon on the right, which is nephrite, as is customary in pieces of this kind. A further jadeite cabochon sits in the disc’s center. The accents range from 3.7mm to 4.4mm. The pendant measures 55.75mm in height without the bail and 40mm in width, and weighs 15.5 grams in total. A chain was not included in this acquisition, and one was not added to this piece allowing the new owner to use an existing favorite chain without the additional cost of another. A one-of-a-kind jade statement piece for the collector.
