Lewis, Lucy – Turtle Clay Figure (1960s)

Lucy Lewis is one of the great Matriarchs of Pueblo potters of the 1900s. She was an important revivalist of Acoma pottery throughout her career. This is one of her clay turtles. The piece is painted with bee-weed (black). The back of the turtle has a star pattern. It is charming! The piece was traditionally fired so there are some color variations to the surface. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. It is signed on the bottom, “Lucy M. Lewis”.
