This IWC Schaffhausen timepiece is powered by a manually wound Calibre 73 movement dating to circa 1915, as established through the movement’s serial number. Originally produced for a pocket watch, it has subsequently been converted for wrist wear, bringing an important example of early 20th-century Schaffhausen watchmaking into a contemporary format. Calibre 73 also holds an interesting place in the broader history that eventually led to the IWC Portugieser. It was the open-face, or Lépine, version of IWC’s 17-ligne movement family, while the closely related Calibre 74 was its hunter, or Savonnette, counterpart. In 1939, IWC selected Calibre 74 to power the earliest Portugieser Reference 325 watches. The restored dial preserves the period character of the piece, while its substantial pocket-watch movement and wristwatch conversion create a distinctive combination of historical engineering and modern wearability.
