We inherit those ideas slowly. They take shape through expectations and the subtle messages we absorb from the world around us. By the time we begin questioning them, they often feel like they were ours all along. Worth becomes conditional before we ever realize we’ve accepted the bargain. We learn to believe that acceptance waits for us on the other side of achievement, approval, or becoming someone different from who we are today. The finish line keeps moving, and every version of ourselves feels valuable only until another expectation takes its place. After enough years, those expectations stop feeling external.
