Black mother of pearl is the dark grade of nacre — the same natural shell lining as the pale stone, taken from the near-black end of the range. At rest it reads almost black. Tilt it into the light and the surface breaks open into teal, sea green, violet and deep blue, then closes back to black as the wrist turns. Polished to a semi-gloss, so the iridescence carries without a mirror glare fighting it. This is the second-generation Submariner dial — the Submariner II. The face is redrawn around a full printed minute track that runs the outer edge, with mirror-polished applied indices raised off the surface and filled with Swiss Super-LumiNova® BGW9 A-Grade. The logo and the Automatic script are applied too — set onto the dial rather than printed onto it. No date, no cutout — the clean dive face, with the index ring unbroken all the way round. It runs on the no-date NH38, and on a date caliber too if that is what you have. Every dial is one of one. Mother of pearl is a natural material, so the figuring on your dial is unique — no two are alike, and yours will not match the photograph exactly. Browse the Mother of Pearl Series . Natural black nacre, semi-gloss. Cut from the dark grade of genuine mother of pearl and finished to a semi-gloss. The colour is not a coating — it is the shell's own structure bending light, which is why it shifts as you move. Applied indices, BGW9 A-Grade lume. Raised, bevelled, mirror-polished silver indices — set onto the dial surface, not printed on — each filled with 100% Swiss Super-LumiNova® BGW9 A-Grade, the brightest grade Super-LumiNova makes. Cream-white by day, cool blue by night. A clean, unbroken dive face. No date cutout anywhere on the dial. The NH38 is the cleanest partner, but an NH35 or NH36 works just as well — the date wheel simply turns unseen behind the dial. Fits 3 and 4 o'clock crown builds. Four dial legs as supplied — clip two to suit your case. One dial covers both the modern 3 o'clock and the classic SKX-style 4 o'clock crown position. A dial needs a matching set of hands to tell time. To match the A-Grade lume, pair it with a set of Swiss Super-LumiNova® BGW9 hands so the dial and hands glow to the same standard. Movement. This is a no-date dial, so a no-date caliber is cleanest — the Seiko NH38. A date caliber such as the NH35 or NH36 fits perfectly well; the date wheel just turns unseen behind the dial.
