Standing off the coast of Angus on the treacherous Bell Rock reef, also known as the Inchcape, Bell Rock Lighthouse is the oldest surviving sea-washed lighthouse in the world and the oldest existing rock lighthouse in the British Isles that is still active. Designed by Scottish engineer Robert Stevenson, it was completed in 1811 after years of work on this notoriously dangerous stretch of sea.Legend has it that the rock takes its name from a warning bell installed there in the 14th century by the Abbot of Arbroath. The bell was stolen just a year later by a Dutch pirate.
