Maori War, New Zealand Medal to Private Abel Candy served 43rd Light Infantry
New Zealand Medal (1869), reverse undated, named 779. ABEL CANDY 43RD FOOT. It comes with copy of the medal and muster roll, census, marriage certificate and newspaper article. Abel Candy was born in Sedghill, Wiltshire about 1845, the 1861 census records him working as an agricultural labourer in Wiltshire, England. He enlisted into the 43rd Regiment of Foot on 7/4/1863 in Bristol, at the time the regiment was stationed in India. In September 1863, the 43rd left India to take part in the New Zealand Wars, returning to England in February 1866. Abel served with the regiment in New Zealand from 4/3/1864 – 8/3/1866, during this period he was hospitalized at one stage. He was discharged on 18/10/1866 probably due to sickness. He married in November 1867 in Sedghill and died in 1913 in Wiltshire.
