Bulgari "Bvlgari Bvlgari" ref. BB 33 GL
The Bvlgari Bvlgari was born in 1975 from a deliberately subversive idea: use the bezel as a signature, engraving the maison's name twice around its circumference in the Roman lettering of an ancient coin. The result turned a standard round case into something unmistakably Italian — confident, graphic, and entirely free of the Swiss watchmaking conventions that dominated the luxury market at the time. Forty years on, the double-name bezel remains one of the most instantly recognisable design signatures in watchmaking. Reference BB 33 GL — 33mm, yellow gold, leather strap — is the classic proportion of the original line. The black dial is the most compelling choice in the family: deep, lacquered, with gold applied baton indices and matching hands that disappear and reappear against the dark surface as the wrist moves. The date aperture at 3 o'clock sits discreetly within the overall composition. Against the warm yellow gold of the case and bezel, the black dial creates a contrast of considerable elegance. The engraved bezel — "BVLGARI BVLGARI" in spaced Roman capitals — does all the work that a signature on the dial would normally do, leaving the dial itself free of text. A decision that looks obvious in retrospect, and that nobody had thought to make before. A Bvlgari Bvlgari in yellow gold with black dial is the reference in its most resolved configuration.
