Wildebeests, also known as gnus, are among Africa's most recognisable and abundant large mammals. Found across the open grasslands and savannas of eastern and southern Africa, these hardy antelope are famous for their annual migrations in search of fresh grazing and water. With their muscular build, curved horns, shaggy mane, and distinctive bearded appearance, wildebeests are uniquely adapted to life on the plains. Their strong herd instincts provide protection against predators such as lions, hyenas, leopards, and crocodiles. The Great Migration, involving over a million blue wildebeests across the Serengeti and Maasai Mara ecosystems, is considered one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles. Following seasonal rains, these animals travel hundreds of kilometers, crossing rivers and vast landscapes while supporting a rich web of life.
